What Is the Gateway’s Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO)?

The Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) is a crucial component of Gateway, humanity’s first space station around the Moon. Built by NASA’s commercial partner Northrop Grumman, HALO is one of four modules where international teams of astronauts will live, conduct scientific research, and prepare for missions to the lunar South Pole region. The main structure of HALO is currently undergoing testing at a Thales Alenia Space facility in Turin, Italy.

How Do the Docking Ports Facilitate Lunar Missions?

Gateway’s docking ports play a vital role in supporting lunar missions. The docking port inside HALO, visible in the image on the right, will be used by cargo spacecraft and Gateway’s Lunar View module provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). The external docking port, seen on the left, will accommodate the SpaceX Starship and the Blue Origin Blue Moon Human Landing Systems during the Artemis IV and V missions, respectively.

What Is the Role of International Partnerships in Gateway?

International collaboration is key to Gateway’s success. Alongside HALO, the space station will launch with the Power and Propulsion Element from Maxar Space Systems. It will later expand with modules such as ESA’s Lunar I-Hab and Lunar View, the Crew and Science Airlock from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, advanced external robotics from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and critical hardware from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). These partnerships exemplify the global effort to explore deep space.

How Does Gateway Fit Into the Artemis Program?

Gateway is central to NASA’s Artemis architecture, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface for scientific discovery and pave the way for the first human missions to Mars. By providing a sustainable lunar presence, Gateway will enable long-term exploration and research, addressing key scientific questions and preparing for future deep space missions.

What Does an Artist’s Rendering Reveal About Gateway?

An artist’s rendering of Gateway offers a detailed view of the space station, showcasing its interconnected modules, solar panels, numerous antennas, and scientific instruments against the backdrop of outer space. This concept image highlights the docking of ESA’s Lunar View module and a government-reference Human Landing System to HALO, illustrating the station's capability to support various mission components.
