Are There Hidden Caves Beneath the Moon's Surface?

An international team of scientists, using data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), has discovered compelling evidence suggesting the presence of caves beneath the Moon’s surface. The data, re-analyzed from the Mini-RF (Miniature Radio-Frequency) instrument, indicates a cave extending over 200 feet from a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis, located 230 miles northeast of the first human landing site on the Moon.

How Far Do These Lunar Caves Extend?

The full extent of these lunar caves remains unknown, but the Mini-RF radar data provides new insights into their potential size. According to Noah Petro, LRO project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the analysis reveals how far these caves might extend, hinting at a vast network of tunnels beneath the lunar surface.

What is the Origin of These Lunar Caves?

Scientists believe these caves are similar to "lava tubes" found on Earth. They likely formed when molten lava flowed beneath a field of cooled lava, or when a crust formed over a lava river, creating hollow tunnels. If the ceiling of these solidified tubes collapses, it opens a pit that can lead into the rest of the cave-like structure.
